Bumping into Carole Luby (a performance artist, founder of 25SG and friend) at an artists talk we discussed her fundraising efforts for Twenty Five Stratford Grove and we came to the agreement that I could give some time as an artist (rather than money).
For anyone who hasn’t heard of 25SG please visit their blog here.
25 Stratford Grove (25sg) is a 3-storey terrace house with a garden in Heaton, Newcastle, where artists make work, think about work, reflect on work and show their work.
Carole was thinking about the notion that at a certain level of sponsorship an individual could be given a token of appreciation. She put forward the idea of a canvas bag as a possible thank you gift.
As I enjoy machine embroidery I volunteered to have a go at making some patches. Almost as soon as I attempted my first patch my sewing machine ground to a halt!
So there is only a tiny bit of machine embroidery on the first patch I made “25SG Sketch” and a lot of rushed hand embroidery!
Using the initial embroidery sketch I used Photoshop to create a digital design.
My digital illustrations are characterised by strong colours and bold mark making. I tried to mirror this style in the 25SG logo.
It reminds me of shagreen (shark skin) or snake-skin… there’s something animalistic about it!
I’m not totally happy with the bricks behind the 25SG as they make the logo look like camouflage or ivy. I hope Carole can find some use for them!
And once more their official blog here.
