I have run two sessions based on the work of Danish painter Henrik Simonsen in the Sandford Goudie Gallery in The Customs House, Mill Dam South Shields.
School Session (£5 per participant)
Working alongside year 5 pupils from Gosforth East Middle School we examined the subject of Henrik Simonsen’s beautiful paintings and thought a bit about the processes and techniques he uses.
After analyzing his paintings verbally and in writing we set about making our own Simonsen like artworks in pairs. We started with detailed pencil drawings then selectively added colours from a limited palette.
Taster Session for Children aged 7 to 11 (£5 per participant or £3.50 for families on low incomes)
All of the group completed their initial outline drawing.
Most of the group added tints and shades of a contrasting colour to the background of their paintings.
Some participants got as far as adding another unexpected colour to the plants they had sketched out.
A number of the children said they were going to go home and try to finish off their artworks. I was extremely pleased at how well the children worked, they were extremely polite, showed good listening skills and worked well as a team.
I can’t wait for more art sessions at The Customs House in January!
Future sessions based on the forthcoming ‘Materialistics’ show are planned for January.
