Monochromatic Moments Young Peoples Satarday Art Club at The Customs House

This project was inspired by the charcoal drawings and needle felted sculptures of Joss Wrigg in her solo exhibition at The Customs House Transition 2.

The young artists used this project to explored ways to make art using tints and shades… we decided to focus specifically on black and white.

Each participant made an A3 abstract charcoal drawing based around an original abstract collage they produced by cutting and rearranging an A4 photograph of highly decorated Easter Eggs. [An Easter activity with a difference]

The second part of the project required team work… the children were put in pairs and asked to create a jigsaw of animal textures (again using the willow and compressed charcoal). Elizabeth will spend some time filling in the black sections and then the work will be displayed for a short time in an exhibition tbc

Finally we each attempted our own monochrome painted dog portrait. Taking inspiration from Joss Wriggs characterful drawings we used some wonderful  photographs of dogs diving into swimming pools.

Outcomes of the 2nd Young Persons Art Club Project ‘Textile Characters’ at The Customs House

Our second project was to create a textile character linked and inspired to Paul Shriek’s solo exhibition of costumes at The Customs House called ‘Leopard’.

Paul Shriek is a North East based designer who has worked in theatre across the UK and helped design the costumes for the Customs House pantomime last year ‘Aladdin’.

The young artists used this project to explore how costume designers work focusing on colour, pattern and sewing skills.

Children learned a range of textile skills including how to thread and knot a needle; how to start and finish sewing; running stitch; backstitch and applique.

Many members of the young persons art club had little or no experience of sewing so I am absolutely delighted with the characters that they created and feel they have developed confidence in a new area of art, craft and design.

Participants also briefly had the opportunity to meet and chat to Paul Shriek which they enjoyed a great deal- there favourite thing was his use of colour and pattern along with his contagious laughter.

Outcomes of ‘Once Upon A Time’ Children’s Art Project at The Customs House South Shields

The young artists who participated in this six week project worked very hard to write, storyboard and make their own illustrated books.

Week one we looked at the exhibition “Once upon a Time” a exhibition by The Materialistics textile art group based at the Customs House. Children learned a two pencil drawing technique and produced a range of high quality observational drawings.

The second week we developed a themed visual research board based on either fantasy, jungle or domestic animals. Amazingly everyone selected Fantasy as their theme.

We produced a range of designs for our main character and used a writing framework to devise a short story.

The storyboard helped us plan how we would illustrate and break down our story into eight pages.

Each child made their own stitched book and worked hard to realise their plans.

The outcomes were incredibly original, creative and highly skilled.

The stories included:

Mr Cheesy Poofy Cat (married to Mooey a beautiful cow) who has an allergic reaction to eating a mouse;

Crogan a frog who falls asleep after too much fly juice and his picnic becomes much more eventful than he planned. The starting point for this story was a great drawing of a knitted Jeremy Fischer;

Sparks a female genie who battles evil (inspired by Aladdin);

Mr Tibbles a greedy sweet gobbling monster who bites off more than he can handle inspired by The Gruffalo;

Rob the Rainbow Gingerbread Man who wants to find a safe home (inspired by the gingerbread house in Hansel and Gretel); Soul a wild flying wolf searching for a new pack (the second book in this young artists series!);

Leonard a champion lilypad leaper whose athletic outfit is mysteriously not in his top drawer

and

Jennifer a young girl who has an extraordinarily strange adventure (inspired by Alices Adventures in Wonderland).

NE26 1DGAn exhibition of children’s artworks created over the half term with the help of artist Elizabeth Kane have been put on display in Park View Shopping Centre Whitley Bay on the site of the former X-Catalogue store until the end of November.

I think the artworks turned out incredibly well and I’ve had some lovely feedback from participants which is greatly appreciated. I love the banner and think the colours are incredibly vibrant, the finished letters remind me of mosaics or patchwork quilts.The sea creatures were more complex shapes but the children and their helpers (Mums, Mams, Dads, Granddads, Grandmas, Nanas and friends parents) took their time and put lots of effort into making sure they were completed to the highest possible standard. Top marks all around!Elizabeth Kane

Childrens Art Workshops Inspired by Henrik Simonsen in The Sandford Goudie Gallery The Customs House South Shields

I have run two sessions based on the work of Danish painter Henrik Simonsen in the Sandford Goudie Gallery in The Customs House, Mill Dam South Shields.

School Session (£5 per participant)

Working alongside year 5 pupils from Gosforth East Middle School we examined the subject of Henrik Simonsen’s beautiful paintings and thought a bit about the processes and techniques he uses.

After analyzing his paintings verbally and in writing we set about making our own Simonsen like artworks in pairs. We started with detailed pencil drawings then selectively added colours from a limited palette.

The session was led by visual artist Elizabeth Kane linked and inspired by Henrik Simonsen’s solo show “Where Wild Things Grow” November 2011.

All of the group completed their initial outline drawing.

Most of the group added tints and shades of a contrasting colour to the background of their paintings.

Some participants got as far as adding another unexpected colour to the plants they had sketched out.

A number of the children said they were going to go home and try to finish off their artworks. I was extremely pleased at how well the children worked, they were extremely polite, showed good listening skills and worked well as a team.

I can’t wait for more art sessions at The Customs House in January!

Elizabeth K.
